At Windy City Family Dental, we want to see our patients as comfortable and confident with their smile as possible. When a person is missing one or more teeth, not only can their diets be impacted, but they may hesitate to speak or laugh freely. Dental implants provide a permanent solution to missing teeth and can even be combined with bridges and dentures for a personalized fit and feel.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants provide a stable anchorage point for a beautiful, natural-looking dental restoration. There are three components to a standard dental implant: a titanium rod, an abutment, and the crown. During the procedure, the titanium rod is inserted into the jaw, providing permanent and stable support. The abutment, or connecting point, works to attach the dental crown to the implant. The crown is made to look and feel like a natural tooth, helping recipients eat what they like and speak with confidence.
The Process
For most patients, the process of getting a dental implant unfolds in stages. First, your oral health and candidacy will be assessed by your dentist. Once you have been confirmed for the procedure, a date will be set to insert your dental implant. During the procedure, a channel will be drilled into the jawbone and the rod inserted. Initial healing of the surgery site can take three weeks or more. It may take up to four months for your dental implant to fully fuse to your jawbone. Once the channel is fully healed, you will return to the office for impressions. When your final restoration is complete, it will be screwed in place atop the abutment.
Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
While implants provide an excellent restorative option for many people, it’s not an ideal solution for everyone. When it comes to any kind of procedure, your dentist will want to make sure you are healthy enough for the best results possible. During the assessment phase, your dentist will look for certain details to confirm your candidacy.
The ideal candidate for dental implants:
- Is not a heavy smoker
- Has a good oral hygiene routine
- Has healthy gums and amble remaining jawbone
- Is in generally good health and can tolerate dental surgery
- Is not suffering from a chronic illness which could compromise the implant
