What is a Dental Emergency?

If you are experiencing dental pain or believe you are at risk of losing a permanent tooth—you should treat your problem as an emergency. Increased temperature sensitivity, tooth discoloration, or tenderness and swelling of the gums are also signs you need an emergency dentist near River North. Whatever the issue, it’s important to take action quickly so that you can start feeling better soon and avoid more extensive dental treatment later on.

Frequently Asked Questions

As experienced dental care professionals, we’ve heard from patients dealing with all kinds of different dental emergencies over the years. If you don’t see your question below, give us a call!

Why is my tooth throbbing?
A painful and persistent throbbing in your tooth (toothache) indicates that damage has occurred. Even if you can’t see anything wrong with your tooth, there may still be a cavity or infection causing the pain. Over-the-counter pain medicine can help manage your symptoms before your appointment.

I broke/chipped/cracked my tooth—what do I do?
The first thing to do is to rinse your mouth out with warm water. If part of your tooth has broken off, you should try to spit it out to avoid swallowing or biting down on it. Degrees of pain for dental trauma can vary, but if it hurts very badly it’s likely that the root itself has been affected. Applying a cold compress to the affected area of your face, and taking over-the-counter painkillers, can help manage your discomfort while you await your appointment.

Can you save a knocked-out tooth?
By acting quickly and carefully, it is possible to save a natural tooth that’s been knocked out (also known as a dental avulsion). Pick your tooth up from the ground by the crown, avoiding touching the root, and give it a gentle rinse under running water. Call our emergency dentist near River North immediately for an appointment. You can contain the tooth in a small jar of milk while traveling to our office, or try to place it back in the socket it fell from.

There’s something stuck in my teeth—is this a dental emergency?
It may be! Leaving something lodged between your teeth or below your gum line could cause an infection. The first step should be to try to remove it with gentle flossing or a toothpick. If the debris is stubborn, do not try to force it out, as you may damage your tooth or gums. It’s best to make an appointment with a dentist.
