At Windy City Family Dental, we’re passionate advocates for preventative home care. Your dentist will only see your smile a few times a year, but you have direct access to it every day. We always work to make sure our patients feel prepared for their hygiene routine at home. If you have any questions or concerns about your routine, we’re here to help!
Consistent oral hygiene can help you fend off lots of different dental conditions including tooth decay and gum disease. A healthy dental routine has a few steps and only takes a couple minutes out of your day.
1. Brush your teeth at least twice per day, in the morning and at night.
You can also brush between meals to rinse away harmful bacteria and food particles. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoridated toothpaste.
2. Floss at least once per day.
Floss between your teeth every day to remove food debris and plaque. The best time of day to floss is before bed. Flossing is important because your toothbrush simply can’t reach every area of your mouth that needs to be cleaned. In fact, 35% or more or your tooth’s surface is missed when you only brush your teeth!
3. Enjoy a balanced diet.
Eating a nutritious diet is key to lifelong health, including the condition of your teeth! Make sure that you are getting recommended doses of essential vitamins and minerals. Avoid eating excessive amounts of sugary or acidic foods, as these can damage your teeth over time. If you do eat sugary or acidic foods, rinsing with water or brushing your teeth can help limit the effects on your teeth.
4. See your dentist regularly.
Most people should be visiting their dentist every 6 months or twice a year. Professional dental cleanings are an important part of maintenance, as even with daily flossing and brushing you may be missing areas of your mouth. Skipping your exam can also lead to a dangerous delay in discovering oral health problems, leading to more invasive and expensive treatments down the line.
