When You Need a Root Canal
Many patients have had a cavity and undergone a filling procedure at the dentist at some point in their lifetime. Cavities are caused when bacteria buildup leads to plaque that sits on teeth and eventually wears away at the enamel, leaving holes in the teeth. When cavities are left untreated, they can lead to serious complications such as pain, infection, and irreversible tooth damage.
Discomfort is usually the first sign that there is something wrong with a tooth. A patient might experience an ache or sharp pain while chewing, randomly throughout their day, or for extended periods of time. This happens with shallow cavities on occasion, but it can also occur when a cavity has grown to such a size that the only way to save the tooth is to perform a root canal.
Root canal therapy is utilized when the inside of a tooth or teeth, also known as the pulp, has been compromised. Root canals prevent the need for tooth extraction and implants, while minimizing damage to existing teeth.
The Procedure
Without treatment, a damaged tooth can lead to infection, abscesses, and other dental problems. Many people are fearful of root canal therapy because it has a reputation for being arduous and painful. However, root canals are often completed in as little as two appointments, with minimal discomfort thanks to anesthesia, and state of the art dental equipment.
The process of root canal therapy is simple. First, the dentist prepares the area with a numbing agent and then isolates the tooth or teeth which require treatment. Then, a special drill will be used to access the pulp and root canals of the tooth so the dentist can clean them out thoroughly, essentially hollowing out the tooth.
Next, the dentist will fill the insides of the tooth and seal the opening to prevent bacteria from gathering. Afterwards, a patient is sent home with antibiotics. When the patient returns for their follow up appointment, the dentist will adhere a permanent crown to the top of the treated tooth to protect it and heighten its durability, allowing it to perform like a natural tooth.
