Radiographs, also known as X-rays, are one of the most important tools used by our Chicago family dentists. X-rays play a key role in detecting, diagnosing, and treating a variety of different dental conditions for patients of all ages. At Windy City Family Dental, we rely exclusively on digital X-ray imaging.
The Purpose of X-Ray Imaging
When a patient visits us for a dental exam, they can expect to have a visual inspection of their teeth, gums, and tongue. There are certain things about a person’s dental health that can’t be identified with the naked eye—this is where X-ray imaging comes into play. We request X-rays for a number of reasons, including:
- Assessing an injury. If you’re in our office for an emergency visit due to dental trauma or pain, an X-ray may be essential to treatment. Using an X-ray, our Chicago family dentists can determine the extent of damage and how best to resolve it.
- Evaluating development. Young patients tend to need X-rays more often than adults with healthy smiles as their mouths are in a state of development. Your child’s dentist may order an X-ray just to make sure things are on track.
- Detecting cavities. Patients who have sensitivity, a dark spot on their tooth, or dental pain could be dealing with a cavity. Cavities tend to bore into the tooth and require radiographic imaging to see in entirety.
- Planning restorative treatment. X-rays are essential when determining a patient’s options for tooth restoration. Without an X-ray, dental implants, crowns, and bridges are difficult—if not impossible—to plan for and place.
Types of Dental X-Rays
Our Chicago family dentist has a series of imaging poses that may be requested during an examination. Each type focuses on showcasing a different area of the mouth, from a new angle. Depending on the reason for your visit, your dentist will request one or all of these images.
- Bitewing X-rays focus on a specific area of the mouth, displaying upper and lower teeth in the chosen section.
- Periapical X-rays are intended to show the state of one or two teeth of interest to the dentist. This image will show the complete length of the tooth, including the root.
- Panoramic X-rays provide the widest view at a person’s mouth, helpful for diagnosing widespread issues.
- Occlusal X-rays capture a complete image of the top or bottom row of teeth.
- Orthodontic X-rays offer an overall look at the person’s orthodontic state, including how the jawbone fits into the skull.
Digital X-Ray Safety
X-rays are known to expose a person to a small amount of radiation. Compared to the dangers of an untreated dental condition, the risk is negligible. To reduce patients’ risks even further, our office relies on digital X-rays, which use even less radiation compared to traditional machines, and protective gear for our patients and staff.
