Dental crowns are used by dentists to restore certain teeth which have been damaged, often by tooth decay. A dental crown can provide additional strength to a weakened tooth, enabling patients to regain confidence while eating and speaking. This type of dental restoration can be made with tooth-colored materials or metal.
What Are Dental Crowns Used For?
There are many different dental circumstances which can result in a crown. Your dentist may recommend a dental crown to:
- Support a tooth damaged that has been damaged by decay
- Improve the look of discolored or misshapen teeth
- Strengthen teeth that are broken or worn-down
- Stabilize a dental bridge
- Cover a dental implant
What To Expect When Getting a Crown
At Windy City Family Dental, we make the process of getting a dental implant as simple as possible for our patients. In most cases, the process of acquiring a new crown will take two visits.
Consultation and Preparation
During your first visit, your dentist will consult with you regarding your dental habits, take x-rays, and conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. It may be found that additional preparatory work needs to be done before a crown can be made. If not, your tooth will be filed or filled to create an ideal surface for your crown to attach to. An impression of your tooth will then be taken and sent to the lab creating your crown. You will receive a temporary crown to wear while awaiting your permanent crown.
The Dental Crown Procedure
When you return, your dentist will remove your temporary crown and confirm the fit and shade match of your new crown. If no adjustments are necessary, your crown will be placed using a specialized dental cement. With the crown, your smile will have a new and beautifully uniform look!
Broken Crowns
Dental crowns can last up to 15 years with positive habits including great daily care and regular maintenance by a dentist. Still, accidents happen and at some point your crown may need repair. Our dentist’s office is fully prepared to handle issues such as cracked or dislodged crowns. If you have a problem with an existing crown, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ll work to get you in for an appointment as soon as possible!
