If you’re not happy with the color of your teeth, a professional teeth whitening treatment at our office may be right for you. Few people are blessed with naturally white teeth that keep their shade even as the years go on. Fortunately, for those who are unhappy with the color of their teeth, whitening is an option! At Windy City Family Dental, we offer professional teeth whitening services to help patients feel happy with the appearance of their smile.
What Causes Discoloration?
When assessing a dental patient’s tooth color and exploring the details of their lifestyle through consultation, any number of contributing factors could be identified. Factors that affect your teeth’s color may include:
- Diet. Certain foods and beverages are known to stain teeth. Examples include berries, tomato sauce, red wine, tea, coffee, and curry.
- Aging. It’s perfectly natural for the brightness of a person’s teeth to dim with time.
- Genetic makeup. It’s true—bright and healthy teeth can run in families. Some people may be pre-dispositioned for dental health issues and dull tooth color.
- Tobacco use. Not only can smoking and chewing tobacco can have a serious impact on your health, these habits can also discolor your teeth.
- Certain medications and illnesses. Certain conditions, such as fluorosis, and certain medications can change the color of a person’s teeth.
ZOOM! Teeth Whitening
At our dental office, we utilize ZOOM! Teeth Whitening techniques to help patients get a whiter smile that they can be proud to show off. The professional teeth whitening treatments provided at our office include the use of a safe and effective whitening gel. The gel is formulated with hydrogen peroxide as the primary bleaching agent.
Before the gel is applied, a protective shield will be administered to the patient’s gums to keep the gel in the proper area. During the whitening procedure, the gel may be applied multiple times (in intervals averaging 15 minutes) in order to get the ideal shade. During each interval, a special light will be used to activate the gel for faster whitening. The entire process takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour.
Once the treatment is complete, we will provide aftercare instructions to help the patient maximize their results. This could include sending the patient home with an at-home whitening system. We will recommend which foods and beverages to avoid in order to maintain the new, brighter shade. Some people will experience dental sensitivity for 12-24 hours after their visit.
