At Windy City Family Dental, we’re always looking for ways to help our patients get the healthy and attractive smile they deserve. If you’re missing one or more teeth in a row, a dental bridge may be the perfect solution to improve your oral functionality and confidence.
How Do Dental Bridges Work?
Dental bridges are a permanent, fixed restoration for people who are missing a single tooth or multiple teeth in a row. Unlike dentures or other kinds of appliances, bridges cannot be removed. Once installed, they function similarly to natural teeth and must be cared for daily with brushing and flossing.
Dental bridges are designed to be anchored to dental crowns or implants on either side of the gap. These fixtures provide a sturdy setting for new, natural-looking teeth. All parts of the restoration are custom-made to fit perfectly and blend in with your smile.
The Benefits of Installing a Dental Bridge
- Restores your ability to speak, eat, and chew
- Alleviates excess stress on your natural teeth
- Restores shape and volume to your face
- Replaces a different appliance, such as a partial denture
- Prevents your remaining teeth from shifting out of place
- Improves the cosmetic appearance of your smile
What to Expect From the Process
When it comes to installing a new bridge at our office, we will begin with a thorough dental examination and consultation. During this initial step, our dentist will determine if this is the best solution for your smile. Typically, any unresolved dental or gum problems will need to be treated before moving forward with restorative care.
If a decision is made to move forward with the procedure, we will prepare the teeth surrounding the gap by removing a portion of the enamel to make room for new crowns. Once the teeth are prepared, we will take impressions of your smile that will be sent to a lab. While the new bridge is being fabricated, you will be given a temporary set to wear.
When your bridge is ready for installation, you will return to our office to have it placed. We will remove the temporary bridge and check the permanent bridge for fit before cementing it in place. Your dentist will then provide you with aftercare instructions and answer any questions you have about taking care of your new bridge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Long Does a Dental Bridge Last?
In general, dental bridges are expected to last 5–15 years. Just like with your natural teeth, diligent daily care can help prevent wear-and-tear and early replacement. We also recommend keeping up with your regular dental visits, which can help identify issues before they worsen.
How Long Does it Take for a Dental Bridge to Settle?
Most patients will need a brief adjustment period to their bridge before their bite feels completely ‘normal.’ This period generally lasts 1-2 weeks. While some discomfort is to be expected, pain should be reported to your dental team.
