What To Expect During a Teeth Cleaning & Exam
Chances are, you’ve had a dental checkup at least once in your life! At Windy City Family Dental, we pride ourselves on providing top-notch care during every visit and building relationships with our patients. Visiting twice per year provides an opportunity for us to get to know you and your smile. During your visit, we make ourselves available to answer any health-related questions you have.
The Cleaning
Your dental hygienist will begin by examining your teeth and gums with a concave mirror, looking for signs of oral issues and areas that will need special attention. Using a hooked scaling tool, your hygienist will remove plaque and tartar between your teeth and near your gum line. Your teeth will be polished and flossed, which helps to lift stains and restore a shine to your smile. We may also recommend a fluoride treatment, applied as a gel and left on for approximately one minute.
The Exam
If this is your first visit to our practice, your dentist will begin by asking you a few questions about your dental history. Your dentist will then conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and jaw. Depending on your dental condition and the date of your last x-ray, we may conduct dental x-rays. Your appointment will conclude with a review of the findings of your exam and treatment recommendations from your dentist (if any are needed).
How Often Do I Need to Visit My Dentist?
In general, you should plan to visit your dentist twice a year (every six months). People who have special dental health conditions and/or are continuing treatment for a specific issue may be asked to return more often. Your dentist can provide a personalized recommendation for your dental care timeline.
