How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

If you’re experiencing tooth pain, the chances are that you may need a root canal. This standard dental procedure can help relieve pain and save your tooth.

But how long does a root canal take? And what can you expect during the process? Keep reading as we answer all of your questions about root canals!

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that involves removing the infected or damaged pulp from the inside of your tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue located inside your tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves. Once the pulp is removed, the tooth is filled with a special material called gutta-percha.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

There are a few different reasons why you might need a root canal. The most common cause is because the pulp has become infected. The pulp becomes infected due to the following:

  • deep decay
  • crack or chip in the tooth
  • injury to the tooth.

If the pulp becomes infected, it can cause severe pain, swelling, and even an abscess.

Another reason you might need a root canal is that the tooth has become damaged. That can happen due to wear and tear, a large filling, or repeated dental procedures.

In some cases, the tooth may not be at risk of becoming infected. However, the damage to the tooth is significant enough that a root canal is necessary to save it.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

The time it takes to complete a root canal varies depending on the individual case. In most cases, the dentist can complete the procedure in one or two visits to the dentist.

However, some patients may require more than two visits. And the root canal can take 30 minutes to an hour and a half on the first visit.

What Can I Expect During a Root Canal?

You can expect the dentist to numb your tooth and the surrounding area during a root canal. That will help ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure.

Next, the dentist will create an opening in the tooth so that they can access the pulp. Once the pulp is removed, the tooth is then filled and sealed.

After the procedure, you may experience some tenderness or sensitivity in the treated tooth. That is entirely normal and should resolve itself within a few days. If you have any concerns or questions, talk to your dentist.
