Wisdom Tooth Removal – What to Expect
While wisdom teeth were quite necessary for survival at one point, human evolution has since rendered them almost completely obsolete. They are not only unnecessary for proper oral function, but can actually cause serious dental problems and tooth pain for many individuals.
Wisdom teeth are the last adult molars to erupt in the mouth, and they sit at the very back of both the top and bottom rows of teeth. Often, they have to be surgically removed, either because the patient’s mouth is not large enough to accommodate them, they come in at an odd angle, become impacted, or they become infected.
While wisdom tooth removal is not uncommon, those who know they need to undergo the procedure still might be wondering what to expect.
When your dentist determines you need wisdom tooth extraction, you will meet with an oral surgeon who will talk to you about your health history, any medication you might be taking, discuss the surgery with you, give you a chance to ask questions, etc.
Then, when you undergo surgery, you will be put under anesthesia. The length of time it will take to complete the surgery depends on how many teeth you will have removed and their placement.
After surgery, you will likely experience swelling and some pain for a few days following the procedure. Eating and speaking may be difficult for a short period of time. You will be encouraged to eat soft foods such as soup or pasta, gently exercise your jaw, drink plenty of fluids, and use an ice pack to help reduce swelling.
Additionally, you may be advised to use moist heat to treat any jaw pain, take your prescribed medications, and avoid dislodging blood clots that form on the surgery site (e.g. by brushing your teeth).
You will also want to avoid drinking through a straw (this could dislodge blood clots), eating hard foods, rinsing your mouth out rigorously, and smoking.
